College Essay

Writing the College Essay

Writing the College Essay (also known as the Personal Essay) is often the most challenging part of the application process for high school students.  It’s easy to see why: the essay asks you to talk about yourself and your experiences in a unique way that highlights your accomplishments, challenges, and self-knowledge for anonymous readers with the power to decide your future–all in 650 words or less for the common app essay!  It can be a little intimidating.

Whatever stage you are at, Better Edge Tutoring can help you to create a College Essay that reflects who you are, impresses your readers, and opens doors.  For students with a finished draft, we offer proofreading, suggestions for revision, and a ranking system to see how your essay stacks up against others.  For students with a very rough draft or no draft at all, we offer a 4-week seminar that takes you “From Zero to 650” and will end with a final draft.  It includes essay-generating prompts, online 1-on-1 lessons from a writing teacher, suggestions for revision, proofreading, and a ranking system to see how your essay stacks up against others.

In signing up for the College Essay, you will be working directly with Dr. Kevin Cooney.  As a writing tutor, Dr. Cooney has been helping students write, revise, and proofread their College Essays since 2012. His more than a decade of experience teaching at both the high school and college level (including UCLA, Drexel University, and Queens College, CUNY) has enabled to help many students gain admission to Ivy League Schools, combined undergraduate and medical programs (B.S., M.D.), and Top 25 Public Colleges.

Kevin worked with  my son to write his college essays to several Ivy League colleges. Kevin was extremely supportive, understanding, flexible and knew how to help my son get all his essays done with a high quality writing style. Kevin is the best and I extremely thankful to him for his help!

“I contacted Kevin last semester when I was struggling with my 35-page senior thesis on literature and philosophy. Kevin proofread drafts and offered ideas on where to go next when the paper hit a dead-end.  He kept me focused on my best ideas.  I ended up turning in a 35-page thesis I was extremely proud of. Kevin knew how to get the most out of me and made me a better and more productive student.”

-Daniel G. (Yelp Review, 11/6/2014)

“When I was applying to medical school, and again for residency, I asked Kevin to help me edit my personal essays. His suggestions helped me express myself more concisely and stylistically, and I wasn’t the only one who noticed. My interviewers always told me that my personal essays stood out. When you have someone who can look at your essay with a critical eye and give constructive feedback, it makes all the difference.”
